People will not always stay mum in the face of what is increasingly unjust and truly revolting

Read the Writing!

IXCHEL

The writing is on the wall… and it's up to those in power to see it.

The killing of Michaela Harte is just a precursor to other signs which our authorities would do well to read. Like Hamlet said: "something is rotten…"

...The policy and decision makers are blindfolded or blinkered..Some of the tourists Mauritius is trying to attract are known for their dirty money… is that what our leaders want? To induce our country to become one of these playgrounds for corruption, money-laundering and all the afflictions which have plagued "developed" countries to the point that they are almost on their knees as a result?

Sometimes I feel our leaders are selling our island cheap to the highest bidder, whether it is to build a hotel, shopping mall or "economic zone". I wonder about their concern for People, whom they have long stopped putting first… otherwise we People wouldn't be so thirsting for an adequate water supply, for more beaches, for less land under construction, for more interest in how we are going to sustain energy production… we People wouldn't be tired of seeing Integrated Resorts and Real Estates being built on land limited and restricted to us, but generously offered to "residents" who will barely even stay. We People wouldn't want to harm these tourists we see, displaying their wealth and disrespect towards our values and customs, if we felt we were as wealthy and respected as them.

Bottom line: our resources are being freely given to guests in passing, as we struggle for survival and for resources of our own. If we are currently water-scarce, it is not because there is no water, but because there was no thought or plan as to how much would be needed for all the haphazard "development" going on. If we are soon to be land-scarce, it will be because we allowed the construction frenzy to happen, without a thought to recycling our fields for local food production, to consistently reduce food costs in the end. If we're ever energy-scarce, it will be because we didn't think long-term enough to master the sun, wind and waves which our beautiful island is so blessed to have… and which would have been sufficient to support its People's needs for power.

So it's up to those responsible to see the writing on the wall. To read the signs which are speaking of oppression, discontent and revolt. To learn from history that People will not always be "admirable" and stay mum in the face of what is increasingly unjust and truly revolting. So it's time, whether Time will soon end or not, that some real change occurs, for the good of all People.
